"For many children of the 1960s and 1970s, it’s a familiar scene: Sunday morning sunlight pours in through the window as you sprawl out on the living room floor. Some families busy themselves as they get ready for church—you may even already have on your Sunday best. From the family TV, a familiar voice bellows: “Oh, Daaavey.”

"At first, Collins played a Gibson LG-2, but almost immediately, the kids were sent to guitar builder Paul Bigsby’s shop in Downey, where he had customized or built instruments for Travis and others on “Town Hall.” For Larry, he dressed a 3/4-size Gibson ES-140 with an inlaid armrest and pickguard with Larry’s name, much like what he’d done on Maphis’ Super 400. He also added a Bigsby pickup near the bridge. In the years that followed, Larry worked with Semie Moseley on several fancy guitars including doublenecks that became trademarks associated with him and Maphis."

Busking was a means of survival for Dietrich in the 1970s. She and her late first husband Joel Dunsany—who went by the stage name The Cosmic Man—were draft-card-burners who went underground, obscuring their identities, cutting ties to family, and hitchhiking to different cities. Panhandling and busking was their only path toward income.

"The Monks may be the strangest group ever to take form. Five American ex-servicemen stationed in Germany in the sixties, all dressed in black with heads shaved like monks. This was radical stuff for Germany 1965-66. Coupled with their violent, near-insane music it’s beyond radical for ’66, ’76 or even ’96. I could rattle on about pre-punk this and groundbreaking minimalist that, but that would be too pat. What the Monks were doing back then was way beyond that. The world still hasn’t caught up with the Monks."
