“A mega-prison in El Salvador has opened its doors to its first 2,000 inmates of suspected gang members – who upon their arrival found out there are not enough beds for everyone and there are no mattresses. The facility is designed to house 40,000 suspected gangsters and the security minister for the Central American country warned inmates they ‘will never walk out of here’.”
“Since President Nayib Bukele asked the country’s congress to approve a state of exception in March, the police and army have arrested more than 62,000 suspected gang members and their collaborators.”
“Soyapango is one of El Salvador’s largest cities and is home to more than 290,000 people. The city – which sits just 13 km (8 miles) west of the capital San Salvador – has long been known as a hub for gang activity. ‘As of this moment, the municipality of Soyapango is totally surrounded,’ President Bukele wrote on Twitter. ‘Extraction teams from the police and the army are tasked with extricating all the gang members still there one by one.’ “
